There have been several tornadoes that have touched down near Syracuse, NY over the years. One of the most notable was an EF2 tornado that struck the area on July 8, 2014. This tornado caused significant damage to homes and businesses, including ripping the roof off of a shopping mall and toppling large trees. Thankfully, no one was killed or seriously injured in the storm.
Tornadoes are relatively rare in the Syracuse area, but they can occur during severe weather outbreaks in the spring and summer months. It's important for residents to stay aware of weather alerts and have a plan in place for what to do in the event of a tornado warning. That might include finding a safe space indoors with no windows, or seeking shelter in a designated community storm shelter.
